Madurai:
Madurai is the cultural capital of Tamil Nadu. Situated on the banks of river Vaigai, the heritage of Madurai dates back to 2500 years. Madurai was a part of the Chola, Chera and the Pandya kingdom and these have had major influences in the art, cultural and literary outlook of Madurai. Tamil literature grew and flourished with many masterpieces constructed during this period.
Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple:
One of the biggest temples in India, Meenakshi temple is renowned for the architectural wonder. The temple has a hall lined with 1000 pillars made of stone, which is held in awe by the visitors and the locals alike.
Thirumalai Nayakar Mahal:
This huge palace was the residence of the renowned ruler of Madurai, Thirumalai Nayakar. Built in the 17th century, the palace followed the indo-Saracenic architecture with high domes, minarets and pillars. This palace is now taken care by the Archeological Department of Tamil Nadu.
Thiruparankundram:
The temple at Tiruparankundram is a coming together of a temple and mosque. Believed to have mythological importance, the believers, irrespective of religion visit this place.
Gandhi Museum
An entire museum dedicated to the life and incidents of Mahatma Gandhi. The museum contains pictures of him with various world leaders, incidents of freedom struggle and objects used by Gandhi. The attraction remains the bloodstained garment worn by him during his assassination.
Kodaikanal
This Hill station, located at 120 km from Madurai, forms a part of the Western Ghats. One of the must-see places for any traveler to South India, Kodaikanal is located at 2130 m above sea level. The hillsides are covered with grasslands and meadows making it for a picturesque travel, various rare trees are found in the valleys and forests. Numerous botanical gardens, parks, lakes and waterfalls form the major tourist attractions
