Best Tourist Spots in Wayanad for Nature Lovers & Adventure Seekers

Wayanad—aka the Green Paradise—has always been a crowd-puller for anyone setting foot in Kerala. And if you're one of those travellers who can't resist a leafy escape, congrats—you’ve just walked into your plant-loving friend’s Pinterest board… but way cooler (and with real oxygen).

Waterfalls? Check. Misty mountains? Double check. A backdrop so perfect, you’ll forget filters even exist.

Couples, we see you. There’s a heart-shaped lake with your name on it—perfect for sharing shawls, chai, and just the right amount of Bollywood-level cheesiness (bring your Bluetooth speaker if you must add some more flair).

Wildlife fans, you’re in for a treat. Wayanad is home to one of India’s largest wildlife sanctuaries. Think majestic elephants, exotic birds, and your very own Farhaan moment (yes, the OG “chase your dreams” guy from 3 Idiots)—minus the sad dad subplot.

Now, we know what you’re thinking: “Okay, but where do I crash after all that exploring?” Don’t worry, Great Trails Wayanad by GRT Hotels has your back (and your tired feet). Comfy beds, delicious hot meals, zero alarm clocks. Just you, nature, and maybe that one extra day, you’ll totally end up staying.

Beautiful view of Banasura-dam

Banasura Sagar Dam Diaries

Roughly one good playlist away (around 21 mins or 12 km) from the Great Trails Wayanad, Banasura Sagar Dam is easily one of the best tourist spots in Wayanad. As India’s largest earthen dam, it dishes out epic views, speed boating thrills, and tiny islets dotting the reservoir—perfect for snapping pics, munching snacks, or pretending you’re on a nature show. With the mighty Banasura Hills photobombing in the background, it’s a hit with families and nature buffs alike.

And once you’re done exploring the dam, roll back to the hotel. We’ve thought of everyone, even your ride, with dedicated parking, E/V charging stations, and accommodation for your driver, too. Take a refreshing lap in our infinity pool that seems to spill right into the rolling hills, then burn off those extra dessert calories on cycling trails that’ll make you feel like a hardcore adventurer—even if you’re just casually coasting.

Edakkal Caves: Your Ancestors’ DMs in Stone

Love history with a side of leg day? Edakkal Caves are the oldest of all the tourist attractions in Wayanad, with ancient petroglyphs dating back to 6,000 BCE. Set 1,200 meters high on Ambukutty Mala, these rock shelters feature carvings of tribal symbols, animals, and human figures, offering rare insight into prehistoric life. The short uphill trek and 300 steps lead to stunning views and South India’s only known Neolithic cave art.

After the climb down, it’s time to reward yourself—head back to your hotel for that well-deserved break. Sink into a spa session where wellness meets “ahhh finally”, and let the stress melt faster than ice cream in Kerala’s sun. Take a nap in rooms that smell like fresh air (because yes, they’re smoke-free) and look like they were ripped straight out of a postcard. Maybe even share the view with the world—yes, we’ve got Wi-Fi too. Once you’ve powered up, make your way to our restaurant for a guilt-free feast of local delicacies that'll fuel you up for another day packed with adventure.

Pedal, Play & Picnic at Pookode Lake

Boating? Nature walks? Local snacks and souvenirs? Check, check, and check! Pookode Lake is the peaceful pause in Wayanad’s wild rush of adventures. Tucked 770 metres above sea level and shaped uncannily like the map of India, this freshwater lake is also home to the rare Pethia pookodensis fish (a true tongue twister!). Think pedal boating under cloudy skies, a shaded nature trail perfect for lazy strolls, a quaint little aquarium, and shops brimming with local spices and crafts. It’s the kind of stop that makes both your itinerary and your family photo album a whole lot better.

Once you’re done, head back to our resort and make it a day well spent. Kids can bounce, tumble, and play to their heart’s content in our fun-filled play zones, while the grown-ups enjoy indoor games, chill time, and a good dose of shared laughter.

Two Elephants in Wayanad-wildlife-sanctuary

Into the Wild We Go: Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary

If your dream vacay includes trunk waves from wild elephants, then Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary is your spot. The safaris happen early mornings and late afternoons, so set those alarms! This sanctuary is home to elephants, leopards, deer, and more birds than your camera roll can handle. Hop into a jeep for a safari that takes you deep into the lush forest, bumping along muddy trails with real chances of spotting wildlife near the central watering hole. It’s nature, raw and up close—no filters, no fences, just wild moments waiting to happen.

Hike and Splash at Meenmutty Waterfalls

Craving waterfalls without the long haul? Meenmutty delivers jungle vibes and adventure in a compact, beautiful package. Just a short trek through lush forest leads you to this powerful three-tiered cascade, making it one of the best tourist attractions in Wayanad for nature lovers and photography buffs. The falls roar especially strongly during the monsoon season, surrounded by thick greenery and misty air that feels straight out of a movie.

Once you’re back at the hotel, the adventure’s far from over. Zipline your way back into action at our resort’s adventure zone, or test your balance on the Burma Bridge—equal parts thrill and wobbly fun. Not a fan of heights? No problem. For those who like long walks (and stronger coffee), join a guided stroll through our lush coffee plantation. It’s the perfect way to unwind, stretch your legs, and maybe learn a thing or two before calling it a day.

Beautiful view of Chembra-peak

Trek to the Heart of Chembra

The trek to Chembra Peak’s heart-shaped lake is equal parts “wow” and “where’s the next step?” A must on every list of the best tourist places in Wayanad, this 2,100-meter summit is the district’s highest point. The trail winds through misty tea estates and dense forests, leading to Hridaya Thadakam—a heart-shaped lake that never dries up, even in summer. Though summit access is restricted due to wildlife conservation, the lake itself is a rewarding midpoint. Permits are required from the Meppadi forest office, and only 200 visitors are allowed per day, so early arrival is key.
