Routes of Freedom: From the Madras Presidency to the Journeys We Take Today

Every Independence Day, we celebrate the freedom of a nation. But beyond the flag, the parade and the familiar stories lies another way to experience that freedom: by travelling through the land where it was imagined, debated, challenged and ultimately won.

Much of southern India’s freedom story unfolded across the vast Madras Presidency, an administrative region that once covered large parts of present-day Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and portions of Kerala and Karnataka. Chennai, then Madras, stood at its centre, but the spirit of nationalism travelled far beyond the capital, through trading towns, ports, villages, temple towns and communities across the south.

And perhaps that is what makes travelling through this region today so meaningful.

These are not simply roads connecting one destination to another. They are routes that once carried ideas of self-rule, Swadeshi, equality and identity.

Madras became an important stage for India's emerging political consciousness. The Indian National Congress held its third session in the city in 1887, bringing together delegates who were beginning to articulate a shared vision for India's future. As the movement grew, freedom began to take different forms.

In the southern districts, V.O. Chidambaram Pillai transformed the idea of Swadeshi into action. From Tuticorin, he launched the Swadeshi Steam Navigation Company in 1906, challenging British commercial dominance on the sea and demonstrating that the fight for freedom was also a fight for Indian enterprise and economic independence.

Elsewhere, freedom became personal.

In Madurai in 1921, Mahatma Gandhi made the significant decision to adopt simpler clothing after observing the realities faced by ordinary people, an image that would later become inseparable from his connection with the masses.

Together, these stories tell us something important: India's independence was not created by one moment or one place. It was shaped by countless choices: to speak, to challenge, to create, to participate and to believe in a different future.

The story of southern India was also larger than the boundaries of the Madras Presidency. French-controlled Pondicherry, the princely state of Mysore and Hyderabad followed different political journeys. Their presence alongside the Presidency reminds us that the India we travel through today was once a landscape of different administrations, borders and identities.

Today, those boundaries have transformed into journeys.

We can leave Chennai and travel towards ancient coastal heritage, continue into the former French quarters of Pondicherry, head south towards temple towns, cross into Andhra's coastline, journey west into Kerala's green landscapes or climb towards the mist-covered hills.

We travel for food, culture, family, discovery, relaxation and sometimes simply for the freedom to take a different road.

That itself is a privilege worth celebrating.

For today's traveller, freedom may mean choosing a spontaneous weekend getaway, introducing children to the heritage of another city, tasting a cuisine different from one's own or stepping away from the pace of everyday life to reconnect with nature.

This Independence Day, perhaps we can celebrate freedom not only by looking back, but also by looking around.

At the roads we are free to take.
At the cultures we are free to experience.
At the stories we are free to rediscover.
And in this extraordinary country we are free to call our own.

Because every journey across India is also a journey through the freedom that made it possible.
